Drafting and Design

Program Overview

The Drafting and Design program is designed to prepare students for initial employment, continuation for a 2-year technical degree, or 4-year university level design programs. The department has extensive offerings in Introductory Technical Drafting, Basic Architectural Principles, Engineering Graphics, Computer Aided Drafting, Advanced Architectural Design, Mechanical Design, and 3-D Computer Modeling. The first year student will be introduced to Basic Architectural Principles, Engineering Graphics, and related mathematics, history, and science lectures. Upon entering the second year of drafting, the student is enrolled in Architectural and Technical Drafting Applications in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and employability skills are refined. The third year student is given a variety of projects from residential home model building, commercial development, urban planning, landscape/golf course concepts, subdivision layout, and 3-D computer modeling. Honors credit may be earned for students enrolled in Drafting 5 and 6.

Course Sequence

  • Drafting 1 (Technical Drafting): grades 10 to 11

  • Drafting 2 (Architectural Drafting): grades 10 to 11

  • Drafting 3 (CAD Drafting): grades 11 to 12

  • Drafting 4 (Job skills/Advanced Drafting): grades 11 to 12

  • Structural Drafting 5 (Surveying and Mapping): grade 12

  • Structural Drafting 6 (Civil Engineering): grade 12

Workforce Application

A student who completes each of the following classes earns the corresponding Occupational Completion Point (OCP) and Industry Classification title:

  • Drafting 1: OCP A, Blueprint Reader

  • Drafting 4: OCP B, Drafting Assistant

  • Structural Drafting 6: OCP C, Cartographic Drafter

Articulated College Credit

The Martin County School District and Indian River State College have an articulation agreement that allows the student to earn a maximum of 12 credit hours:

  • Engineering Graphics EGS1110 (After Drafting 4)

  • Basic Architectural Principles BCN1250 (After Drafting 4)

  • Introduction to Autocad ETD1321 (After Drafting 4)

  • Autocad Level II ETD2320 (After Drafting 6)
