Mission

The mission of the Jensen Beach High School Media Center is to ensure that students are effective users of information.  The Media Center serves as the information center of the school by providing both print and non-print materials to support the curriculum and student interests.  The Media Center Staff strives to provide access to materials in all formats, promote the use of technology to enhance learning, provide assistance with research and project development, and promote enjoyment of reading.  The Media Center Staff provides technology support and addresses all submitted media repair and service requests in a timely manner.

Policies

The JBHS Media Center operates on a flexible schedule.  Students are welcome to visit the Media Center at any time when class is not in progress (before school, during lunch, after school … etc.).  A pass is required to visit the Media Center when classes are in progress.

Sending Students to the Media Center

The classroom teacher must accompany their students if the entire class is visiting the Media Center.  Please check in advance on the Media Center Calendars located in the Media Office (Room 2-107) to ensure other classes are not already scheduled to use the Media Center.  Individuals and small groups of students (no more than five) may visit the Media Center with a signed pass from their classroom teacher.  Students without passes will be sent back to class.  Students are not permitted in the Teacher Planning Room (Room 2-109) at any time without supervision.

The media center is meant to be a place of study.  Flexible scheduling allows the resources in the Media Center to be available to students at any time when the need for information should arise.  Students should have a purpose for visiting the Media Center.

Appropriate Purposes for Sending Students to the Media Center:

  • Check out or return materials.
  • Silent study.
  • Conduct research.
  • Take a makeup test.
  • Use audiovisual equipment for class assignments or projects.
  • Produce audiovisual materials for class assignments or projects.
  • Use computer software or computer services not available in the classroom.

Students may be sent back to class if the Media Center is full or if the students are disruptive and off task (see rules below).  Consistently disruptive students may temporarily lose their privilege to visit the Media Center or, in the event of extreme disruptions, be sent to the Dean's Office with a discipline referral.

Checking Out Materials

Students must have their JBHS Identification Card in order to check materials out from the Media Center.  A student may not use another student’s identification card … if this occurs, the identification card will be confiscated and turned in to the Dean’s Office with a discipline referral.  Students may not check materials out for classroom teachers, unless it has been previously arranged by the teacher and Media Center Staff.

Students may have two books checked out at a time.  Books can be checked out for two weeks and can be renewed as needed.  Students can put available books on reserve if they do not have their JBHS Identification Card with them to check the book out.  Reserved books that are not picked up within a week will be put back into the general collection.  Overdue books must be returned before a new book can be checked out.  Overdue books that are not returned in a reasonable amount of time will be declared lost.  Lost and damaged books must be paid for.

The following items can only be used in the Media Center (not available for check out):

  • Reference Books (Encyclopedias, Atlas, … etc.)

  • Audiovisual Equipment
